DIY SOS for Children in Need: Supporting a worthy cause

Working with our valued supplier Deanta UK, the Vibrant Doors team was honoured to supply products for Treetops Hospice in Risley, as featured on DIY SOS 'The Big Build' for BBC Children in Need. It was wonderful to be a part of this project and an experience we'll never forget. Here’s a behind the scenes look at how it all came together.

About
Treetops
Hospice

Treetops Hospice provides nursing care and emotional support for adults and their families in Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire. The charity is run by a close-knit team of passionate individuals, and because all services are provided free of charge, it often relies on donations from local businesses, volunteers and supporters.

DIY SOS Children in need 2023

Often moving and always inspiring, DIY SOS The Big Build for Children in Need showcases the important work of one hand picked charity every year. Previous DIY SOS Children in Need projects have included a safe space for women in Leeds and living accommodation for teenagers in Blackburn. This year, it was Treetops Hospice Derbyshire who received some well deserved support for a new venture.

DIY SOS brings together local tradespeople, businesses (and of course a few famous faces) all of whom give their time to build something incredible that allows the charity to continue its work. After finding us online, Vibrant Doors was contacted by the Children in Need team earlier this year. Needless to say, we were honoured to support such a special local cause.

The project itself

Treetops Hospice was looking to create a new space within their grounds which would be

known as The Saplings; a counselling and therapy centre built with children (and their parents and carers) in mind. The brief was to create something that felt welcoming and would help put young visitors at ease from the moment they stepped through the doors.

The ‘Big Build’ itself would also include bespoke rooms for counselling, complementary therapy and a multi-functional area. Designed to help traumatically bereaved children across Derbyshire for many years to come, the centre would also become a hub for fundraising activities, such as Treetops’ annual Reindeer Dash.

How it came
together

After speaking with DIY SOS and visiting the site, we understood this to be a super-fast turnaround project. However we were only too happy to spring into action.

Knowing we could rely on our trusted suppliers Deanta UK, we were able to select products and arrange delivery within their 10-day construction period (and yes, that is from first brick to finished building!).

Working closely with everyone, we recommended prehung doorsets that were both compliant with building regulations and available with a fast lead time. Eventually we landed on pre-hung door sets from Deanta UK. We supplied fully compliant FD30S & FD60 single, and FD30S double door sets, both for latched and unlatched communal-style applications.

In terms of veneer, after discussion, American Black Walnut was chosen to reflect the ‘classy grained look’ referred to in Treetops original brief. These were sanded down and finished with a subtle matte-black paint on-site. Black grained doors are ultra-popular right now so this culminated in an on-trend yet classic finish, unique to the Treetops project. A really special detail that ties everything together nicely.

From there, we provided advice in regards to frame depth complications and hardware requirements for both latched and unlatched doorsets. More generally, our team guided DIY SOS through the installation process, taking care to provide attentive response times given how soon the Deanta door sets were required on-site.

Helping out as one team

We can’t think of an organisation that deserves their moment in the sun more than Treetops Hospice. And the atmosphere during ‘The Big Build’ was unlike anything we’d experienced before.

It was an honour to meet not only the fantastic Treetops team but selfless local people and businesses who gave up their time to see it all come together. We were also excited to spot famous faces such as Sam Ryder, Sophie Ellis-Bextor (and of course, DIY SOS presenter, Nick Knowles) lending a much-needed helping hand.

A dream
come true

What matters most to us is the reaction of the Treetops team and the positive impact this will have on our local community here in Derbyshire.

Commenting on social media Treetops has said: “Wow. We have no words to express what the DIY SOS show has made us all feel tonight. We are eternally grateful to every single person who gave up their time and skills and offers of support.”

Additionally, Director of Marketing at Treetops, Scott Lee has said: “Thank you so much Vibrant Doors. Treetops Hospice appreciates all that you’ve done.”

Senior member of the Vibrant Doors team Matt Shaw says: “It was a pleasure to play a small part in this deserving project. Children in Need is a British institution and it was an honour to support them.”

“We’re always looking for ways to get involved with local charities in Derbyshire and this has been the highlight of our year. Now we’ve met the Treetops team, we look forward to working together on future projects. Watch this space.”
