What Is a Fire Door?

A fire door is designed to prevent smoke and flames from affecting living spaces in the event of a fire. They help to facilitate a safe exit from the property if a fire should break out, which is why their positioning within homes and commercial buildings is so important.

Fire doors are thicker than conventional internal doors due to their more robust core. They also feature an intumescent strip that runs across the base or around the sides of the door. This expands as it gets hotter, creating a seal that prevents smoke from seeping through tiny gaps between the door and the frame.

Fire doors are rigorously tested by the UKAS Accredited Test Houses and rated by how long they are guaranteed to keep smoke and flames at bay. For instance, FD30 rated doors ensure 30 minutes of fire safety, but there there are also FD60, FD90 and FD120 fire doors that can repel smoke and fire for an hour, hour and a half or two hours respectively. However, FD30 doors are most commonly used in private residences, while FD60 and above are more commonly used in commercial and industrial properties.

Glazed fire doors  use borosilicate or ceramic glass to ensure a great look that bathes the living space in natural light without compromising fire safety.

Do All Internal Doors Need to Be Fire Doors?

Not necessarily. Fire doors are only legally required for doors leading from habitable rooms into  communal corridors or stairwells. If you live in a flat or building of more than 2 storeys, of multiple occupancy (like a student house), the door connecting your living space to communal areas should be fire-rated.

However, there is no legislation saying fire doors cannot be used elsewhere in the home. They can provide additional noise reduction, and extra safety and reassurance when, for instance, used between kitchens and garages that connect directly to living spaces.

Frequently Asked Questions

Question

How much does a standard fire door cost?

The cost of a standard black fire door typically ranges between £200 to £800, depending on the design and style. Residential properties commonly use FD30 doors, which offer a significant level of protection and meet safety standards without the higher expense of commercial-grade fire doors.

Question

What is the difference between a fire door and an internal door?

Fire doors differ from standard internal doors by being crafted from materials that resist fire, and they feature intumescent seals which swell in heat, halting smoke and flames. These features ensure vital extra minutes for safe evacuation, contrasting with regular doors that offer no such protection in a blaze.
